A 100% natural hair growth inhibitor, suitable for both male and female use, all over the body. This is an unscented, topical spray-on solution which is available online for around $50 for a 4oz bottle. It is certainly not the least expensive product of its type, although a 100% satisfaction money back guarantee is offered. Does it work? - we look at the evidence. All in all a somewhat mixed review.

What is a Hair Growth Inhibitor?

Hair growth inhibitors are intended to be used in conjunction with hair removal methods, to restrict the hair from re-growing and increase the time between hair removal sessions.

The main benefits of hair growth inhibitors, therefore,  are reduction in the frequency of hair removal sessions you require and eventually, with continual use, lighter, finer and sparser re-growth.

Who Can Use the Product?

Stophair is suitable for use by anyone, male or female, and for all hair types and skin tones.

Having said that, the evidence suggests that it works more effectively and quicker on hair that is already light and fine.

Results are also improved if the hair removal method used is one that pulls out the hair root from the follicle, such as waxing, epilating, tweezing etc.

Where Can It be Used?

This product can be used on all parts of the body following hair removal.

Efficacy varies depending on the  area of the body being treated - underarms are an area where Stophair produces results more quickly.

Areas of thick, coarse hair will take considerably more time and dedication for any reduction in regrowth to be noticed.

It is made up of natural ingredients which are gentle on the skin, however do carry out a patch test on a small area prior to use all over the body, to ensure that you do not have any adverse reaction.

How to Use it

Firstly, you need to remove the hair from the treatment area.  As previously mentioned, the best results are achieved following methods that remove the hair from the root, such as waxing, epilating etc.

Apply Stophair to the treated area by lightly spraying and then gently massaging into the skin. Repeat this application twice daily for the first 5 days following hair removal.

Thereafter, apply to the area once daily, continuing until your next hair removal session.

You will need to repeat this process each time you remove the hair i.e. apply product twice daily for the first 5 days, then once a day until the next session.

Does it Work? - The Evidence

To determine this, I first took a closer look at the results of the manufacturer's clinical trials.

Clinical Trials

88% reduction in hair re-growth after 7 days

28% reduction in beard regrowth in 8 weeks

49% reduction in beard shadow in 8 weeks

27% reduction in hair growth speed over 2 months

43% reduction in hair thickness in 8 weeks

It is important to understand that hair growth inhibitors can only work on hair that is in the actively growing (anagen) phase.

There are 3 phases of hair growth and hair all over the body is at varying stages at any one time.

The first trial result is from an ex vivo study, which is to say that explants of hair growth from the scalp were taken and kept for 7 days in an adapted medium to mimic normal growing conditions as closely as possible.  However, only hair in the growing stage was used and the number of samples used is not clear.

Some were treated and some were not, and the results showed that there was a 79% decrease in growth after 3 days and 88% after 7 days in the treated group, compared to the untreated group.

The other trials were all based on between 15 and 20 participants, some treated with active ingredients and some with placebos.

The final results shown are based on the results of the best 5 responders.

So what does it tell us?

Well, the number of participants is small and it is not clear who conducted the research, so I would say that it is far from conclusive.

It does give an indication that the product may work for some individuals, although I would question the reliability of the percentages.

Feedback and Reviews

Feedback and reviews of Stophair bears out the view that results are somewhat mixed, with some individuals expressing their satisfaction with the product, whilst others maintain that it doesn't work.

I think it is fair to point out though, that if the product is to work, you will need to be quite conscientious and dedicated in remembering to use it daily, most likely over a long period of time.

The following caviat appears on the official website: "Please be aware this is a natural product, and as such results can vary from person to person".

However, a one year satisfaction guarantee is also offered with a full refund, which suggests a level of confidence in the product.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will Stophair remove the hair permanently?

No, Stophair is not a depilatory and does not remove hair - it is designed to slow re-growth of hair after it has been removed, preferably from the root.

Can I use it with my normal moisturisers and cosmetics?

Yes, apply and rub in Stophair, allow to dry and then you can use any of your usual products on the area.

How long does it take for Stophair to work?

According to the manufacturer, results are possible within 7 days for some people, although they vary from one individual to the next, depending on a number of factors such as hair density, coarseness, colour, area of the body etc.  If you have fine, light hair it is likely to work quicker than if you have thick, coarse, dark hair.  Results can take upwards of 12 weeks and eventual outcome is varied.

Will it work if I shave instead of waxing?

According to the manufacturer you can use any method of hair removal.

Will Stophair make me lose my hair?

No, it will only have any effect on the area that you treat.

Is this product tested on animals?

No, it is cruelty free.

Is it FDA approved?

No, like almost all hair growth inhibitors, this product is not currently FDA approved.

Will Stophair cause ingrown hairs?

No, there is no evidence to suggest that it does.

Can you use it on the face?

Yes you can.  We would advise that you spray onto your fingers to rub into the facial area you have depilated, to avoid over spraying and any chance of getting into the eyes.

Our Conclusions

I have concluded that Stophair clearly gives good results for some individuals, although they cannot be guaranteed.

This is a pretty costly product and it very much depends on how large the area is that you wish to treat and how effective it is for you personally as to whether the outlay is worthwhile.

However, you do have the money - back guarantee so if you are disappointed with the results at least you will not be out of pocket

is it safe to use while pregnant?

    • Sue Sue says:

Hi Tracy – Stop Hair is comprised of natural ingredients which are non-toxic, unlike hair removal creams that are made from strong chemicals. It is very unlikely to cause any issues during pregnancy, however I always advise seeking professional medical advice if you have any concerns.
